Programs Overview
B.Arch
The FAU School of architecture offers the five year, first professional degree, the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) which is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The School is an institution of shared learning, an operative organization within the ”laboratory” of the City of Fort Lauderdale, South Florida, and the Florida-Caribbean and Latin American regions. Through projects and programs that are interdisciplinary and internationally relevant, students and faculty actively learn with communities, allied professionals, artists, builders, developers, manufacturers, and governmental agencies.
The School of Architecture prepares students for the profession of architecture by developing an understanding of design as an interpretive process, where students will acquire a broadened capacity to recognize societal responsibilities and exercise ethical judgment in improving the quality of our physical environment, and with it, our quality of life.
Dessau Institute of Architecture Program
Students graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture degree may choose to study at the Dessau Institute in Germany. This program which began in the 1920’s after World War I was known originally as the Bauhaus. Walter Gropius, and colleagues such as Paul Klee and Kandinsky moved the Art School at Weimar to Dessau in 1925 where it rapidly became known as one of the great centers of the International Modern movement. Disbanded by the Nazis in 1933 the school is now relocated to its original home and offers a Master of Architecture degree. Close to Berlin by train this school offers a three semester in residence program in the center of dynamic architectural growth in the area that was formerly East Germany.
Study Abroad Opportunities
The School of Architecture periodically offers opportunities to students to travel to other countries to broaden their architectural education experience. Courses have been offered for study in Salamanca, Spain, Cartagena, Columbia, The Netherland, London, England, and Mexico City, Mexico. Recent study abroad programs have included: Dessau, Berlin, and Rosenheim, Germany; Thailand; and various cities in Italy.
Other Travel Opportunities
The School of Architecture also offers opportunities to students to travel to other cities within the US and US Territories to broaden their architectural education experience. Opportunities have been offered for study in San Juan, Puerto Rico; New York, NY; Savannah, GA; Chicago, IL; San Diego, CA; Charleston, NC; Boston, MA.
FAU Career Discovery: Architecture Summer Institute for High School Students
Each summer a two week architecture intensive program is offered to high school students giving them the opportunity to explore the world of architecture at the FAU Boca campus. Participants have the opportunity to create models and drawings, attend topical lectures, and experience life in the architecture studio. The program is facilitated by FAU School of Architecture Professors and student teaching assistants. The program is open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school; recent high school graduates; and students in the first two years of college. Current FAU architecture students can apply to be a mentor in this program assisting in curriculum development and guiding participants through the design process.
