Leo Hansen has been a registered architect since 1982. He received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1978, including a year in the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture Rome Studies Program, and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree from the University of Miami in 2002, for which he received an Award of Academic Merit. Hansen has his own architectural practice located in downtown Fort Lauderdale. He has served as Chairman of the City of Fort Lauderdale Planning and Zoning Board, a member of the Infrastructure Task Force for the City of Fort Lauderdale, Chairman of the Broward County Historic Preservation Board, President of the Board of Directors of the Historic Stranahan House Museum, and President of the Fort Lauderdale chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Hansen has been an adjunct professor at FAU since 2004. Since 2010, he has taught Culture and Architecture, and introductory course to the history of architecture from its prehistoric origins to the present day. He is the author of the textbooks Culture and Architecture: An Integrated History and Art and Architecture.
